MARGAO: The villagers of Chandor, Cavorim and Guirdolim have thanked Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardessai for denotifying the State Highway 8 passing through the historic village of Chandor.
Former minister Joaquim Alemao and his son Yuri Alemao also thanked the minister for the same.
Yuri Alemao handed over copy of a letter dated November 23, 2018 addressed by Chief Town Planner Rajesh Naik addressed to Principal Chief Engineer of Public Works Department asking the latter to take action to de-notify the State Highway 8 passing through Margao-Davorlim-Chandor-Curchorem.
The letter points out that the Town and Country Planning Board at its 163rd meeting held on October 15, 2018 it was observed that the Regional Plan 2001 and 2021 showed the State Highway 8 passing from Margao to Sao Jose de Areal to Paroda to Quepem and to Curchorem while the Margao-Davorlim-Chandor-Churchorem road was shown as Major District Road 40.
Besides, it was noted that all technical clearances and other permissions for development along these roads were issued considering the status of the roads as mentioned in the Regional Plan. Hence it was decided to ask the PWD to de-notify the State Highway 8 passing through Margao-Davorlim-Chandor-Curchorem as was mentioned in the Official Gazette dated 17th February 1977.
“In fact Vijai’s promise to denotify the State highway was one of the main reason why I joined the Goa Forward Party,” he said.
adding that the heritage monuments on the village will now remain safe. He also said that it was regrettable that Cuncolim saw development and projects only when his father was the MLA and is now deteriorating.
He said that he has also got some works in Chandor sanctioned through Vijai which include constructing a market complex, developing a children’s playground and also renovating the panchayat building.
