CALANGUTE: Beach shack owners in the Calangute-Candolim beach-belt have stated that the contractor employed by the Tourism Department for collecting garbage from the beach should deploy more vehicles to handle the issue.

“The contractor has only two vehicles on the Calangute-Candolim beach-belt. We have a dedicated Whatsapp group for the garbage collection and shack owners keep on posting messages that their waste has not been collected for two -three days,” John Lobo, general secretary of the Shack Owners Welfare (SOWS), said.
“Every time they say there’s no vehicle. On Friday, the garbage collection vehicle broke down right on the Baga beach and they brought a JCB to tow it away. The tourism department collects crores as license fees and they should either buy or hire more vehicles,” Lobo said.
According to stakeholders, the uncollected food waste creates stinking nuisance. “The garbage contractor only has two vehicles for the whole beach stretch from Sinquerim to Baga, which is insufficient,” Manuel Cardozo, president of the Goan Traditional Shacks Owners Association, said.
“When the garbage is left untouched, it begins to stink. Recently the tourism department fined shacks for putting extra tables and deck beds. They should also fine the garbage contractor if the garbage is not collected promptly,” he said.
