PANJIM: The granting of licenses for sand mining may take a backseat as the Goa State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (Goa – SEIAA) has referred the application for sand mining in Zuari and Mandovi rivers, back to the South Goa District Collector and Directorate of Mines and Geology, for reappraisal and proper determination of Zones of North and South Goa District.

“The Authority feels it appropriate to refer the DSR back to the District Collector South Goa and Directorate of Mines and Geology for reappraisal and for proper determination of the Zones of North and South Goa District because in the near future, there should not be any conflict for implementation and execution of the conditions of the conditions levied in the Environmental Clearance on administrative and other grounds,” the Authority said.
The authority took the decision after taking into cognizance the fact that the District Survey Report (DSR) prepared by the District Collector of South Goa has mentioned various zones which are identified for the purpose of extraction of sand.
The authority had received an application from the Director of Mines and Geology for prior environmental clearance for river sand mining in Borim, Shiroda, Makazan, Panchavadi, Amona and Piligaon, Khandola, Betqul, Navelim, Dignasur and Kombai villages.
“Apparently the Zone 1, Zone 2 and Zone 3 of Mandovi River which are located in District of North Goa are finding a mention in DSR of South Goa. So also some villages which are of North Goa District like that of Zone 5, Zone 6, Zone 7 and Zone 8 of Mandovi River which are located in North Goa District seems to be finding mention in the District Survey Report (DSR) prepared by South Goa Collector,” the Authority said.
