MARGAO: The Assolna panchayat has reported an encouraging response to its recently introduced door-to-door garbage collection initiative, with locals actively participating in waste segregation.

Assolna Sarpanch Ivano Fernandes highlighted the positive community involvement and stressed the importance of sorting waste at its source to maintain village cleanliness.
Fernandes told reporters that the initiative, which includes the collection of both dry and wet waste, has received a better response than anticipated. “Residents have embraced the door-to-door collection system, particularly with wet waste handling,” he noted.
The waste collection plan involves an annual charge of Rs 500 for residential households, while commercial establishments pay a monthly fee. Fernandes explained that approximately 100 kg of dry waste is collected daily, sorted and compressed into bales. Meanwhile, efforts continue to quantify the volume of wet waste collected.
Stressing the significance of waste segregation, Fernandes urged villagers to separate their garbage before handing it over. “This helps speed up the waste management process and minimises unpleasant odours,” he stated, adding that he hopes residents will continue supporting the panchayat’s cleanliness drive.
It was further pointed out that while there are no significant black spots in the area, the panchayat remains vigilant, promptly addressing occasional instances of roadside dumping. Special cleanup campaigns are organised as needed to maintain cleanliness.
It was also mentioned that a panchayat vehicle services all seven wards on alternate days, collecting an average of three loads of waste daily. All this, the panchayat added, is to ensure that there is a systematic approach to resolving waste related issues in the village.
