The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has rejected the application to establish a second fish meal plant in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, offering a temporary reprieve to residents who have long battled pollution in the area.
The proposed plant had faced stiff opposition from local residents and environmental activists, citing severe air pollution, foul odours, and contamination of groundwater caused by existing fish meal and fish processing units.

For years, Cuncolkars have campaigned against the environmental degradation caused by industrial activity in the estate. Residents now seek clarity from the government and GSPCB on when permanent relief from pollution will be provided, including whether a comprehensive audit of existing facilities is planned and what corrective actions will follow.
“This is not the first time we have successfully opposed a second fish meal plant,” a resident said. “While this decision brings relief, our fight continues until all pollution issues are addressed, and promoters respect the sentiments of Cuncolim residents.”
Environmental groups and locals hope the GSPCB’s decision will also prompt stricter monitoring of current units to prevent further harm to the community and local environment.
