The All India Lawyers Union (AILU) on Monday strongly condemned the shocking incident in which a shoe was hurled at Chief Justice of India, B.R. Gavai, during proceedings at the Supreme Court. The act, which took place on the morning of October 7, 2025, occurred as the Chief Justice began hearing the first matter of the day.
Eyewitnesses reported that an elderly man shouted slogans stating, “India won’t tolerate Sanadan’s insults,” before throwing the shoe toward the Bench. The projectile did not hit the Chief Justice, who remained calm and reportedly remarked, “I am the last person to be affected by such things. Please continue.”

Investigations revealed that the individual, identified as Kishore Rakesh, had a Supreme Court proximity card typically issued to lawyers and clerks.
In its statement, AILU described the incident as a blatant attack on the Supreme Court and India’s independent judiciary. The union warned that it should not be seen as an isolated act but part of a “well-orchestrated campaign” aimed at undermining judicial independence, judicial review, and secularism in India.
AILU called for a thorough investigation into the incident and urged stern action against the perpetrator and any accomplices. The union also appealed to the legal fraternity and wider society to condemn the act through democratic and peaceful protests.
