RAIA: Hosts Guirdolim Club got the better of CAC Cansaulim 2-1 to advance into the quarter-finals of 19th All-Goa Guirdolim Panchayat Cup organised by Guirdolim Club at Chandor Church sports complex, on Saturday.
Egged on by a sizeable home crowd, hosts Guirdolim Club started the match on an attacking note testing the rival defence time and again.
Gale D’Costa of Guirdolim Club squandered a scoring opportunity in the very 3rd minute when he failed to connect a cross floated in by Rostan with only the goalkeeper to beat.
In the 5th minute, Hayden Fijardo shot wide from a hand shaking distance when played on by Mateus with a defence splitting pass. CAC Cansaulim slowly but steadily got into the match with Aaron troubling the Guirdolim Club defence on the right wing.
Hayden made amends for his earlier miss in the 7th minute when he collected a through ball from Mark and after dribbling a couple of CAC Cansaulim defenders coolly placed the ball beyond the diving CAC Cansaulim goalkeeper to give Guirdolim Club the lead.
Both teams then displayed attacking football but could not score any goals till the break.
Changing ends, both teams were equally matched but their strikers let them down. In the 40th minute, Hayden scored his brace when he shot from the top of the 18-yard box to find the back of the net and make it 2-0 for Guirdolim Club.
CAC Cansaulim tried hard to get back and managed to pull a goal back when Aaron converted a penalty in the 45th minute awarded when Akram handled the ball in the 18-yard box leaving no chance to the referee but to award a spot kick, 2-1.
