Dense Fog Disrupts Air Traffic at Delhi Airport; Over 100 Flights Cancelled, 300 Delayed

Severe fog conditions significantly disrupted flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Tuesday, prompting officials from the Civil Aviation Ministry to visit the airport’s Operations Control Centre to review the situation.

According to flight tracking website FlightRadar24, at least 100 flights were cancelled, while more than 300 flights were delayed as poor visibility affected air traffic movement throughout the morning. Sources said ministry officials assessed real-time operations and took stock of the impact of the fog on flight schedules.

Amid reports suggesting that the CAT III system—an advanced instrument landing system that enables aircraft to land in extremely low visibility—was not functioning, Delhi Airport authorities refuted the claims. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) clarified in a statement that the CAT III system was fully operational and that flight movements were being conducted under CAT III conditions.

The disruption coincided with deteriorating air quality in the national capital. At 6 am, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 456, marking the second-worst air quality level of the season, further compounding challenges for residents and travellers alike.
