₹50 Crore Renovation Fails to Assure Safety at Kala Academy

Serious concerns have been raised over the stability of the renovated Kala Academy building despite crores of rupees being spent on its refurbishment. The Kala Academy Task Force Committee said several works remain incomplete and pointed to visible cracks and water leakage at multiple locations. The committee noted that IIT Madras conducted a visual inspection in September and later submitted a draft report highlighting structural concerns. It recommended infrared and thermal scanning to thoroughly assess the building’s strength. Terming the ₹50-crore renovation exercise a waste, the task force stressed the need to protect the iconic cultural institution for the next 50 years. It also noted that an additional ₹10 crore proposal has been put on hold. The committee questioned how the building continues to function despite safety issues and said a fresh inspection and review would be conducted within a month.
