Prime Minister Narendra Modi has renewed his call for economic self-reliance and domestic consumption, urging citizens to refrain from luxury foreign travel, overseas destination weddings, and non-essential gold purchases. Delivering a selfie-style video message while in Bishkek for the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, the Prime Minister linked personal financial restraint to India’s long-term economic development.
The appeal coincided with national data showing India’s economy expanded by 7.8% in the first quarter. PM Modi congratulated the nation on achieving this milestone despite severe global headwinds, including geopolitical conflicts, international supply chain disruptions, and energy market volatility. He emphasized that placing greater emphasis on Swadeshi (indigenously produced goods) and local reliance would ensure that India presents a fully developed nation to its youth by the 100th anniversary of its independence.

Addressing the nation, PM Modi advised against spending domestic capital abroad when unnecessary. He explicitly requested that citizens avoid taking leisure holidays overseas, hold weddings within the country, and buy gold only when essential. The message echoes an earlier call for austerity made during global energy uncertainties, reinforcing the administration’s strategy of retaining wealth within the domestic market to insulate the economy against external shocks.
Taking a swipe at domestic critics, the Prime Minister noted that while the nation is progressing rapidly, certain factions “drowned in an atmosphere of despair” were attempting to spread false narratives. Using the phrase “jhooth ki goonj” (echoes of lies), PM Modi delivered a veiled critique aimed at political opponents while asserting that the country’s actual growth trajectory speaks to the clear intentions and policy success of the government.
PM Modi reaffirmed his confidence in the 140 crore citizens of India, stating that collective effort and right-minded policies would continue driving the economy to new heights regardless of global turmoil.
