“I am from Goa”: António Costa hails landmark India–EU trade pact

European Council President António Costa on Monday described the newly signed India–European Union Free Trade Agreement as the “most ambitious” trade pact in the bloc’s history, while underlining his personal connection to India. Speaking at Hyderabad House, Costa said he was proud of his Goan roots, telling the audience, “I am from Goa.” Recalling his ancestral links, he said he was an Indian citizen by origin and thanked India for inviting him to the Republic Day celebrations. Costa added that India–EU relations were deeply personal for him, shaped by history, heritage and shared democratic values. He said the agreement marked a new chapter in bilateral ties, reflecting the growing strategic and economic partnership between India and the European Union.
