Chief Electrical Engineer (CEC) Stephan on Wednesday said that smart metering is the need of the hour as it will enable consumers to monitor their day-to-day electricity consumption and use power more efficiently.
Speaking during a public hearing of the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC), Stephan said smart meters would bring greater transparency and awareness among consumers about their power usage patterns.

“Smart meters will improve power consumption. People will be able to know their day-to-day usage. This will help consumers regulate and manage their electricity consumption better,” he said.
Addressing opposition to the project, Stephan remarked that some sections are opposing smart meters for political gains. He maintained that the initiative is aimed purely at benefiting consumers and strengthening the power distribution system.
The CEC also highlighted the advantages of underground cabling, describing it as a good project that will benefit the public in the long run.
“With underground cabling, faults can be identified easily. Earlier, it was very difficult to trace faults in bunch cables,” Stephan explained.
He added that both smart metering and underground cabling are key components of modernising the electricity infrastructure and ensuring a more reliable and efficient power supply for consumers.
