South Goa MP of the Congress, Captain Viriato Fernandes, today slammed a social media post circulating in his name, claiming that Dabolim Airport would be closed within 24 hours, calling it “completely fake.” Speaking exclusively to Herald TV, he alleged that the post was orchestrated by the ruling BJP to mislead the public and create unnecessary panic.
Fernandes criticised the BJP for attempting to attribute false information to individuals and groups working to protect the airport, describing such tactics as part of a broader pattern of misinformation. “It is in their DNA to lie and distort facts,” he said, pointing to repeated attempts by political rivals to shift blame onto the Defence Ministry and manipulate public opinion.

Highlighting his ongoing efforts to safeguard the airport, Fernandes said he has held multiple discussions with officials in Delhi to ensure uninterrupted airport operations. He also suggested that private interests, particularly the GMR Group, were exerting pressure on government authorities regarding airport management. “Even BJP ministers have admitted that private players are influencing decisions,” he noted.
Despite the fake posts, Fernandes reaffirmed his unwavering opposition to any closure of Dabolim Airport. He called for transparency in decision-making and warned against politicising operational matters for short-term gains. “Our fight to keep Dabolim Airport fully operational for the people of Goa will continue,” he added.
The MP urged citizens not to be swayed by misleading social media posts and stressed that responsible political discourse is crucial for protecting key infrastructure in the state.
