Amid growing concerns over escalating tensions in West Asia, the Central Government on Monday assured citizens that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, LPG or crude oil in the country. Officials said India currently has sufficient fuel reserves and there is no reason for panic buying or unnecessary hoarding.
During an inter-ministerial media briefing, the Petroleum Ministry stated that the government has already taken precautionary steps to minimise the impact of the ongoing geopolitical situation on India’s energy supply chain.

A senior official from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said the country has adequate stocks of crude oil, petrol, diesel and cooking gas to comfortably meet domestic demand. Officials acknowledged that nearly 90 per cent of India’s energy imports pass through the West Asia region, but clarified that supply lines remain stable and uninterrupted.
The government also clarified Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal urging citizens to conserve fuel and avoid unnecessary travel. Officials stressed that the message was intended to encourage responsible energy consumption during uncertain global conditions and should not be interpreted as a warning about fuel shortages.
“There is absolutely no shortage of fuel supplies in the country,” an official said, adding that authorities are continuously monitoring developments in the region.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs said India is diversifying its energy sourcing strategy by purchasing fuel from multiple countries to reduce risks linked to geopolitical tensions. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India continues to support peace and dialogue in West Asia.
Officials from the Ministry of Ports and Shipping also confirmed that 10 Indian-flagged ships have safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz, while efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe movement of other Indian vessels operating in the region.
