Russian forces have reportedly begun using a new handheld anti-drone system known as “Yolka,” designed to intercept and destroy hostile drones in flight.
A video circulating online shows a soldier launching a small interceptor drone from a compact, pistol-like device. According to reports, the launched drone automatically detects and tracks an enemy unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), pursuing it through the air before neutralizing it through direct impact.
The Yolka system first attracted public attention during Russia’s Victory Day parade in May 2025. Observers spotted a compact launcher being carried by a security officer positioned near Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russian officials later identified the device as part of the Yolka anti-drone system.
Designed specifically to counter the growing threat posed by enemy drones, the Yolka functions as a portable drone interceptor that can engage aerial targets at close range. Unlike traditional anti-aircraft systems, it employs a small autonomous drone that physically collides with its target to bring it down.
The interceptor features a cylindrical fuselage and two sets of X-shaped wings that provide lift and stability during flight. The design eliminates the need for a conventional tail section commonly found on aircraft. At the rear, the drone is equipped with electric motors and propellers that enable propulsion and directional control.
The emergence of systems such as the Yolka highlights the increasing importance of counter-drone technology on modern battlefields, where unmanned aerial vehicles are being used extensively for reconnaissance, surveillance, and attack missions. Portable interception systems are increasingly being developed to provide frontline troops with a rapid and effective means of neutralizing aerial threats.
