Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Get His India Call-Up? Key Questions Before June 6 Squad Selection

The BCCI selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, will meet on June 6 to pick India’s squads for the upcoming white-ball tours of Ireland and England. While the focus will be on naming squads for the T20I and ODI series, the selectors also face several crucial decisions regarding leadership, senior players and emerging talents.

One of the biggest talking points is India’s T20I captaincy. Current skipper Suryakumar Yadav is reportedly set to lose the role after a disappointing run with the bat in recent months. Despite leading India successfully, Suryakumar struggled during the T20 World Cup 2026 and managed only 270 runs in 13 IPL innings this season.

Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has emerged as the leading candidate to take over the T20I captaincy. Iyer enjoyed another impressive IPL campaign, scoring 498 runs in 14 matches and continuing to strengthen his leadership credentials after guiding teams successfully in recent seasons. However, selectors must first decide whether he returns to India’s T20I setup after being overlooked since 2024.

The vice-captaincy is another issue on the agenda. Axar Patel, who served as deputy during the T20 World Cup, endured a modest campaign and a relatively quiet IPL season. This could open the door for fresh leadership options.

Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan are among the contenders. Kishan enjoyed a stellar IPL season, scoring 602 runs in 15 innings, while Abhishek smashed 563 runs and continued his rise as one of India’s most exciting young batters.

The availability of veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will also be closely monitored. Kohli is currently recovering from a hamstring injury, while Rohit is awaiting fitness clearance. Both are expected to return for the ODI series against England after missing the Afghanistan assignment.

Meanwhile, all eyes are on teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old enjoyed a dream IPL season, finishing as the Orange Cap winner with 776 runs and breaking the record for most sixes in a single IPL edition. Reports suggest he could receive his maiden India call-up for the T20I series.

Another player pushing for selection is Rajat Patidar. The RCB captain continued his impressive rise by scoring 501 runs in IPL 2026 and could challenge for a middle-order spot in India’s T20I side.

With several leadership decisions, senior-player fitness updates and potential debutants to consider, the June 6 selection meeting promises to be one of the most significant of the year.
