Goa Monsoon Intensifies: Mormugao, Pernem and Canacona Receive Heavy Rainfall; Widespread Showers Continue Across State

Margao, June 8: The southwest monsoon maintained its grip over Goa, bringing widespread rainfall across the state during the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 a.m. on June 8, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Among all rain gauge stations, Pernem recorded the highest rainfall at 58.2 mm, closely followed by Mormugao with 55.4 mm and Dabolim with 28.8 mm, indicating vigorous monsoon activity over coastal and northern parts of the state.

Canacona continued to receive substantial rainfall with 27.4 mm, taking its seasonal total since June 1 to an impressive 204.4 mm, the highest cumulative rainfall recorded in Goa so far this monsoon.

Other stations reporting notable rainfall included Dharbandora (24.4 mm), Sanguem (17.8 mm), Margao (16.0 mm), Sanquelim (10.6 mm), Quepem (10.0 mm), and Old Goa (9.8 mm). Panaji received a comparatively modest 7.0 mm, while Mapusa recorded only 4.2 mm.

The IMD classified the spatial distribution of rainfall across Goa as “widespread” (most places) and stated that monsoon activity remained normal during the reporting period.

The data also revealed that Canacona leads the state in cumulative seasonal rainfall with 204.4 mm, followed by Mormugao (140.4 mm), Old Goa (116.4 mm), Pernem (116.2 mm), and Margao (111.5 mm.

Meteorologists expect continued monsoon showers over the coming days, providing relief from summer heat while also prompting residents to remain cautious in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

The IMD noted that the rainfall figures are provisional and are compiled from manual observations and automatic weather stations, with final verification carried out at the end of the month.
