Anant M. Ambani’s appointment as a whole-time executive director of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has received overwhelming shareholder support, with 94.4 per cent voting in favour of the move.
The youngest son of Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani, Anant assumed the role on May 1, 2025, for a five-year term. Before taking on executive responsibilities, he served as a non-executive director on the company’s board.
A graduate of Brown University, Anant has become widely known for his work in wildlife conservation and animal welfare. His most prominent initiative is Vantara, a 3,000-acre animal rescue, rehabilitation and conservation project located within Reliance’s Jamnagar complex in Gujarat. His efforts earned him the Global Humanitarian Award 2025 from the Global Humane Society, making him the youngest and first Asian recipient of the honour.
Apart from Reliance Industries, Anant serves on the boards of several key Reliance group companies, including Jio Platforms, Reliance Retail Ventures, Reliance New Energy and Reliance New Solar Energy. He has also been a board member of the Reliance Foundation since 2022.
His appointment as the youngest whole-time director of Reliance had previously attracted scrutiny. In 2023, proxy advisory firm Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) advised investors to vote against his board appointment, citing concerns over his age and relatively limited leadership experience.
However, another advisory firm, Glass Lewis, supported his elevation, arguing that his experience was comparable to that of his siblings Akash Ambani and Isha Ambani, who also hold leadership roles within the Reliance Group.
The strong shareholder approval now marks a significant endorsement of Anant’s growing role within India’s largest private-sector company.
