In a proud moment for the Goa judiciary, Dr. Shabnam Shaikh, who has served as District and Sessions Judge-3 and Additional Sessions Judge in South Goa and is currently serving as Officer on Special Duty at the Kolhapur Circuit Bench of the Bombay High Court, has been awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Law.
Dr. Shaikh was conferred the doctoral degree on May 2, 2026, for her research titled “A Critical Study of the Socio-Legal Aspects of Matrimonial Disputes in the State of Goa.” The study explores the legal and social dimensions of matrimonial conflicts within the state’s unique legal framework.

Her research was carried out under the guidance of Dr. (Prof.) Shabbir Ali, Principal of V. M. Salgaocar College of Law, Goa; Prof. Vishwanath M., Dean of the Faculty of Law at Karnatak University, Dharwad; and Prof. Kim Rocha of V. M. Salgaocar College of Law. Dr. N. Kolwalkar also made a significant contribution to the research as an internal guide.
Dr. Shaikh acknowledged the encouragement and support of her family, which played an important role throughout her academic journey.
Her achievement has been widely welcomed by members of the judiciary, the legal fraternity and academic circles, who have congratulated her on successfully balancing a distinguished judicial career with advanced legal research.
The accomplishment adds another feather to the cap of the Goa judiciary and highlights the growing emphasis on academic excellence and research within the legal profession.
