Scotland marked their return to the FIFA World Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over Haiti in Group C at Boston Stadium near Foxborough, just outside Boston. John McGinn, Scotland’s captain and Aston Villa midfielder, scored the decisive goal in the 28th minute after his shot deflected off a defender and went past Haiti goalkeeper Johny Placide.
This win gave Scotland their first World Cup victory since defeating Sweden 2-1 in Italy in 1990, ending a 36-year drought for wins at the tournament and their first major-tournament victory since Euro 96. The 64,000-capacity stadium was packed primarily with Scottish fans who traveled in large numbers to support the Tartan Army during Scotland’s first World Cup campaign since 1998.

Steve Clarke’s team now sits atop Group C with three points after one match, ahead of Morocco and Brazil (both with one point from a 1-1 draw) and Haiti (zero points). Scotland faces Morocco at the same stadium on Friday before heading to Miami to take on Brazil, as they aim to reach the knockout stages for the first time in their World Cup history.
