South African international Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, the country’s sports ministry confirmed on Saturday. No cause of death has been disclosed.
Adams was part of the Bafana Bafana squad that made history by reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time. The midfielder featured in all three group-stage matches, starting against Mexico and the Czech Republic before coming off the bench in South Africa’s decisive 1-0 victory over South Korea, which secured a place in the Round of 16.

Although South Africa’s memorable World Cup campaign ended with a defeat to Canada in the knockout stage, Adams emerged as one of the team’s standout performers.
The tournament also brought personal heartbreak. Adams lost his grandmother a day before South Africa’s group-stage clash against the Czech Republic and was substituted at half-time during the emotionally challenging match.
At club level, Adams represented Mamelodi Sundowns after joining the Pretoria-based side in January 2025 from Stellenbosch FC, where he had progressed through the youth academy. He helped Sundowns win the CAF Champions League during the 2025-26 season.
Tributes poured in from across the football community. The South African Football Players’ Union described him as one of the country’s brightest talents, while Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie said the nation had lost a gifted footballer with immense potential. FIFA president Gianni Infantino also extended his condolences to Adams’ family, friends and teammates.
Adams made his senior debut for South Africa in 2022 and earned 13 international caps, scoring twice during the country’s successful World Cup qualification campaign. His untimely death has cut short the career of a player widely regarded as one of South Africa’s brightest midfield prospects.
