Activist Sonam Wangchuk has lost more than nine kilograms after completing 19 days of his indefinite hunger strike, prompting doctors to warn that prolonged fasting could soon begin affecting his vital organs. The health update came on Thursday as the Delhi High Court directed authorities to conduct daily medical monitoring, while Wangchuk reiterated that he would not end his protest without a response from the government.
According to a medical bulletin issued by Dr. Satish Lamba, Wangchuk has lost over nine kilograms since beginning his fast. His blood sugar level was recorded at 80 mg/dL, pulse rate at 72 beats per minute, and blood pressure at 105/61 mmHg while lying down and 101/65 mmHg while seated. Although doctors said he remains mentally alert and adequately hydrated, they described his condition as entering a critical stage.

Dr. Lamba explained that the body’s glucose reserves have already been exhausted, forcing it to burn fat before consuming muscle tissue for energy. Wangchuk’s ketone levels, which indicate fat metabolism, had earlier reached an alarming level before improving slightly with hydration. However, rising uric acid levels suggest muscle breakdown is continuing. Doctors cautioned that if the fast continues, the next phase could involve damage to vital organs.
Hours later, the Delhi High Court ordered authorities to monitor Wangchuk’s health every day and provide medical treatment whenever necessary, observing that every citizen’s life is valuable. Both the Centre and the Delhi government told the court they had no objection to regular medical supervision.
Despite growing concern over his health, Wangchuk refused appeals from political leaders, supporters and members of the film fraternity to end his fast. In a video message, he said doing so without any assurance from the government would send the wrong message. Instead, he urged supporters to participate in the proposed “Chalo Sansad” march on July 20, claiming around 1.5 lakh people have already registered for the campaign.
Several prominent personalities, including farmer leader Rakesh Tikait, former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, music composer Vishal Dadlani, actor Sayaji Shinde, author Shobhaa De and actor Atul Kulkarni, expressed solidarity with Wangchuk and appealed to the government to initiate dialogue before his health deteriorates further.
