India’s private space industry achieved a historic milestone on Saturday as Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, the country’s first privately developed orbital-class rocket. The launch took place from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR) in Sriharikota and marked India’s entry into an elite group of nations where private companies have independently built and launched orbital rockets.
The mission, named Mission Aagaman, witnessed a flawless debut as Vikram-1 completed all stages of flight successfully. The four-stage launch vehicle performed exactly as planned, with each stage operating nominally before successfully deploying its payload into the intended orbit.

Standing nearly seven storeys tall, Vikram-1 is an all-carbon composite launch vehicle designed to carry payloads of up to 350 kilograms into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The rocket has been developed entirely by Skyroot Aerospace, making it the first Indian private company to achieve an orbital launch capability.
The successful mission is considered a landmark moment for India’s rapidly growing private space ecosystem. It demonstrates the increasing role of private enterprises in satellite launches and space transportation, complementing the efforts of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
As Vikram-1 lifted off from Sriharikota, years of research, engineering and testing culminated in a successful first attempt.
