The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced the winners of the 72nd National Film Awards on Saturday, recognising outstanding contributions to Indian cinema during the 2024 calendar year. Among the biggest highlights was the Best Actor category, where Kartik Aaryan and Mammootty shared the top honour.
Kartik Aaryan was honoured for his performance in Chandu Champion, while Mammootty received the award for Bramayugam. The winners were announced at the National Media Centre in New Delhi during a ceremony that was streamed live by PIB India.

The National Film Awards recognise excellence across feature films, documentaries, writing on cinema and technical fields, including direction, screenplay, cinematography, editing and music. This year’s winners were selected by an 11-member jury chaired by filmmaker Jayaraj after reviewing entries from across the country.
The awards reflected the diversity of Indian cinema, with both critically acclaimed and commercially successful films making a strong impact. Productions such as All We Imagine As Light, Laapataa Ladies, Pushpa 2: The Rule, Stree 2, Premalu, Manjummel Boys and Hanu Man were among the year’s most talked-about releases.
Before the winners were announced, performances by actors including Prithviraj Sukumaran, Sai Pallavi, Yami Gautam, Kani Kusruti and Alia Bhatt had also generated considerable discussion. Ultimately, Kartik Aaryan and Mammootty shared the prestigious Best Actor award, capping a memorable edition of the National Film Awards.
