Satellite imagery has revealed a spectacular monsoon rain band stretching between 7,000 and 10,000 kilometres from north India across the Himalayas, China and up to South Korea, marking one of the most active phases of the 2026 southwest monsoon. Meteorologists say the enormous cloud formation is a monsoon convergence zone, created when moisture-laden winds from the Indian Ocean interact with weather systems across Asia.
The weather pattern has triggered widespread rainfall across India, with the country receiving nearly 170-180 per cent of its normal daily monsoon rainfall over the past two days. Experts described the spell as the wettest period of the season so far, with precipitation significantly above the climatological average.
The renewed rainfall has helped improve India’s monsoon performance after weeks of uneven precipitation that left several states facing rainfall deficits. Heavy rain has already been reported in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan and several eastern and northeastern states.
However, authorities have also warned of flash floods, landslides, waterlogging and rising river levels, particularly in the Himalayan states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Meteorologists expect the active monsoon phase to continue through the week, improving seasonal rainfall figures, replenishing reservoirs and benefiting the ongoing kharif sowing season.
The satellite imagery also highlights the interconnected nature of Asia’s weather systems, demonstrating that India’s southwest monsoon is part of a larger atmospheric circulation influencing weather across much of the continent.
