An unusual wedding in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district has gone viral after three sisters married the same man, saying they made the decision because they could not imagine living apart after marriage. The ceremony, held at Chamunda Mata Temple on July 17, has sparked widespread discussion on social media and raised questions over its legal validity.
The sisters — Saroj (20), Savitri (19) and Santosh (18) — are content creators from Dhauriya village in Hasanpur. They married their cameraman, Vikas, who had been working with them for the past six months and often portrayed a husband in their social media videos. Videos of the wedding surfaced online this week, showing Vikas applying vermilion to each of the sisters after the rituals. No family members were present during the ceremony.

Explaining their decision, the sisters said they had spent their entire lives together and were distressed by the thought of separate marriages. According to Saroj, they had even contemplated ending their lives before deciding instead to marry the same man so they could remain together. Vikas said he respected their emotional bond and agreed to the marriage with mutual consent.
The wedding has also attracted criticism from some local Hindu organisations, while the sisters defended their choice, saying all four individuals are adults who acted willingly. They also cited examples from Hindu mythology while responding to criticism.
Legal experts, however, have said the marriage has no legal recognition under the Hindu Marriage Act, which does not permit a Hindu man to have multiple wives simultaneously. Temple authorities stated no priest officiated the ceremony due to ongoing renovation work, while police said no complaint has been filed so far. Authorities added that legal action would be considered only if a formal complaint or cognisable offence emerges.
