India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has opened up about his decision to leave Rajasthan Royals (RR) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, calling it one of the biggest risks of his career. After spending 11 seasons with the Royals, Samson was traded to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a blockbuster deal that saw RR receive Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran in return.
Speaking on JioStar’s Superstars, Samson revealed that he had already decided during the 2025 season that it would be his last with Rajasthan. He said the decision was not impulsive and came only after weeks of discussions with his family and wife.

“Leaving Rajasthan Royals was a huge risk. Once you tell the franchise about your decision, there is no going back. You could end up with a team you do not want or even in the auction,” Samson said, adding that he was eager to embrace a new challenge and prove himself in unfamiliar conditions at Chennai’s spin-friendly Chepauk Stadium.
The 30-year-old admitted his CSK journey began on a disappointing note, with three single-digit scores as the team lost its opening three matches. However, he said the unwavering support from the CSK management made a significant difference.
Samson recalled a conversation with MS Dhoni during the difficult phase, where the legendary former captain reassured him by saying, “Everything will be alright. Just focus on doing what you do best.” The advice, Samson said, reminded him not to overthink or alter his natural game despite the poor start.
The confidence shown by Dhoni, head coach Stephen Fleming and the rest of the CSK setup helped Samson regain his rhythm. He responded with an unbeaten century against Delhi Capitals, which sparked a turnaround in his season.
Samson finished IPL 2026 with 477 runs in 14 innings at an average of 43.36 and a strike rate of 165.63, including two centuries and a half-century. Despite his strong individual campaign, CSK endured a disappointing season, finishing eighth in the points table with six wins from 14 matches.
