Speculation over Hardik Pandya’s potential move from Mumbai Indians to Chennai Super Kings has intensified, with two reported trade proposals emerging ahead of IPL 2027. While neither franchise has confirmed negotiations, the suggested packages indicate Mumbai Indians could gain more from the deal than Chennai.
One proposal involves CSK sending Shivam Dube and young opener Ayush Mhatre to Mumbai in exchange for Hardik. Another suggests Chennai retaining Mhatre but offering Dube, Dewald Brevis and an additional ₹10 crore instead.

Although Hardik remains one of India’s rare pace-bowling all-rounders and a proven leader, his IPL 2026 campaign was below expectations. He managed 206 runs without a half-century and picked up only four wickets, making it one of his least productive seasons. Despite that, his reputation and ability to balance a side continue to keep his market value high.
In contrast, Dube enjoyed a stronger season, scoring 270 runs at a strike rate of nearly 159 while excelling as a finisher. Mhatre also impressed in a brief six-match stint, scoring 201 runs at a blistering strike rate of almost 180, making him one of the tournament’s most exciting young Indian batters.
Brevis had a quieter campaign but remains a promising long-term investment due to his age and relatively low acquisition cost.
Based on a performance valuation model cited in the analysis, both reported trade structures favour Mumbai Indians. The Dube-Mhatre package offers MI greater on-field value while also reducing salary commitments. Even the alternative involving Dube, Brevis and ₹10 crore appears to hand Mumbai the stronger overall return.
For Chennai, acquiring Hardik could still make tactical sense because of his unique all-round skill set and leadership qualities. However, the suggested asking price appears steep, meaning CSK may benefit more by negotiating a lower-cost deal rather than overpaying for a player coming off an underwhelming season.
