India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will be aiming to add another Commonwealth Games gold medal to his glittering career when he competes in the men’s javelin final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The Olympic and World Champion returns to the Commonwealth stage eight years after winning gold at the 2018 Gold Coast Games and will be among India’s biggest medal hopes in athletics.
Neeraj, who missed the previous Commonwealth Games, booked his place in the final after registering a throw of 79.61 metres during the qualification round. The effort earned him fifth place overall, comfortably securing a spot in the medal event despite falling short of the automatic qualification mark of 84 metres.

Interestingly, none of the athletes managed to breach the qualifying standard during the preliminary round, highlighting how evenly matched the field is ahead of the final. While Neeraj finished ahead of defending Commonwealth champion Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan, several other competitors crossed the 80-metre mark, setting up an intriguing contest.
Among the strongest challengers is Grenada’s two-time world champion Anderson Peters, widely regarded as one of the finest javelin throwers in the world. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage also impressed during qualification and will be looking to continue his strong form.
South Africa’s Douw Smit and England’s Ben East were among the athletes who crossed the 80-metre barrier in qualifying and are expected to challenge for podium positions. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, despite finishing below Neeraj in the qualifiers, remains a formidable rival capable of producing a big throw under pressure.
India will also have Rohit Yadav in the competition, while Trinidad and Tobago’s Olympic medallist Keshorn Walcott brings vast experience to the field, making the final one of the most competitive events of the athletics programme.
For Neeraj, the event presents another opportunity to reaffirm his dominance in global athletics. Since winning Commonwealth gold in 2018, he has established himself as one of India’s greatest-ever athletes with Olympic, World Championship and Diamond League success.
