Neeraj Chopra Adds Commonwealth Silver
Competing in his first Commonwealth Games since winning gold at the 2018 Gold Coast edition, Neeraj Chopra began with a throw of 80.97m before improving to a season’s best 85.83m in the second round.
The Indian Olympic champion briefly occupied the top spot before being overtaken by Pathirage. Despite battling chilly, windy conditions and pushing hard in the remaining rounds, Chopra could not find a bigger throw and finished with the silver medal after overstepping on his final attempt.
Yash Vir Singh’s Final-Round Heroics Earn Bronze
The biggest moment for India came from 24-year-old Yash Vir Singh, who produced the throw of his career when it mattered most.
Lying sixth heading into the final round, Singh launched a massive 85.41m personal best with his sixth and final attempt to leap into the bronze-medal position. His remarkable effort moved him ahead of Grenada’s Anderson Peters (83.88m) and South Africa’s Douw Smit (82.88m), completing India’s impressive double podium finish.
Arshad Nadeem Suffers Surprise Early Exit
One of the biggest shocks of the evening came with the early elimination of Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, the reigning Olympic champion and defending Commonwealth Games gold medallist.
Nadeem opened with a foul before managing 77.41m on his second attempt. Needing a strong third throw to qualify for the final eight, he could only register 75.39m, finishing ninth overall and crashing out before the medal rounds.
