BJP Leadership Tells Cadre to Step Up Outreach as Govt Faces Heat Over Jobs, Inflation

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership has asked its cadre to strengthen public outreach and urged elected representatives to spend more time in their constituencies as criticism grows against the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government over issues including employment, examination-related concerns and rising costs of food, transport and energy, according to people familiar with the matter.

The directive comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a lengthy meeting with the BJP’s newly appointed office bearers on Saturday. During the four-hour interaction, Modi is learnt to have stressed the need for the new team to act quickly and reconnect with voters at the grassroots level.

According to a person aware of the discussions, Modi spoke candidly with the party’s national and state office bearers and referred to growing public restlessness. He urged the leadership to approach emerging challenges with fresh ideas and find newer ways to address contemporary problems.

“He said contemporary problems require newer ways of finding solutions…the new team will have to work with newer ideas,” the person said.

The emphasis on public engagement comes as political parties prepare for elections in five states, including Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP faces a strong challenge from the Opposition.

The Congress has stepped up its outreach among young voters through its nationwide campaign, ‘Chhattron Ki Goonj’, led by Rahul Gandhi. The Samajwadi Party has focused on the donation controversy in Ayodhya, while the Aam Aadmi Party has launched its “School Theek Karo Abhiyaan” in Uttar Pradesh under Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh.

Against this backdrop, the BJP leadership has been asked to review its engagement with voters and strengthen contact with people across constituencies.

During the meeting, Modi is also learnt to have shared his own experiences of working his way up through the party organisation. He reportedly offered suggestions on how leaders could better understand public concerns and establish a stronger connection with the electorate.

The focus on grassroots engagement is particularly significant for the BJP, which has traditionally relied on its extensive cadre network and organisational structure. The party also maintains close links with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), whose feedback is considered important in assessing political and organisational performance.

A second BJP leader said there was a perception within the organisation that consecutive electoral victories may have contributed to a sense of complacency among some leaders.

“There seems to be a perception that after winning consecutive elections, a sense of complacency and even hubris may have crept in,” the leader said, adding that this concern had also been conveyed to the party’s top leadership by the RSS.

An internal assessment reportedly found that some elected representatives were spending fewer days in their constituencies than expected.

The party leadership has therefore emphasised the need for lawmakers and legislators to remain accessible to voters, monitor local issues and follow up on the implementation of government decisions.

According to the second leader, groups of MPs headed by ministers regularly meet to discuss issues affecting different states. However, there is concern that some of these meetings have become more of a routine exercise rather than an effective mechanism for addressing problems on the ground.

With political competition intensifying ahead of the upcoming state elections, the BJP’s renewed focus on grassroots outreach is aimed at ensuring that its leaders remain connected with voters and responsive to their concerns.
