Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has come out in support of actor Kriti Sanon after she faced criticism on social media over her outfit in a Raksha Bandhan jewellery advertisement.
Gandhi shared Sanon’s response to the trolling on his Instagram Story and defended her right to make her own choices.
“What a woman wears, what she does and where she goes — is her choice,” Gandhi wrote, adding, “Stop trolling women for exercising their freedom.” He also used the hashtag #SmashThePatriarchy, which he recently featured at his all-woman ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ rally in Pune.
The controversy began as a social media debate over Sanon’s appearance in the jewellery brand’s Raksha Bandhan campaign. The issue escalated after BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut criticised the advertisement and questioned Sanon’s choice of attire.
Ranaut wrote on social media, questioning why Sanon would choose to wear what she described as a bikini or undergarments while tying a Rakhi to her brother when other clothing options were available.
Gandhi’s intervention has since added a political dimension to the controversy, with the Congress leader framing the debate as an issue of women’s freedom and personal choice.
The exchange has sparked further discussion online over the scrutiny faced by women celebrities over their clothing and the extent to which public figures should be criticised for their personal choices.
