Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has demanded that the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary be declared a tiger reserve to strengthen the protection of the Mhadei River and its ecosystem.
Alemao said the move would support the long-term conservation of the river and its surrounding forests. He urged the government to take immediate steps towards notifying the sanctuary as a tiger reserve.
Meanwhile, Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas said Karnataka was ready to resolve the Mhadei river diversion dispute through discussions with Goa. However, he sought clarity from the government on the proposed inspection of the Kalasa-Banduri project.
Viegas demanded that the government announce a clear deadline for the inspection and disclose the next course of action. The issue remains a major concern for Goa, which has consistently opposed Karnataka’s plans to divert Mhadei waters. The Mhadei basin is also ecologically significant and linked to the Western Ghats.
