Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Thursday strongly criticised the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) over the accumulation of garbage on roads across Mumbai, questioning the civic body’s ability to manage the city’s waste.
A division bench comprising Justice Girish Kulkarni and Justice Neela Gokhale expressed serious concern while hearing a petition filed by residents of Kannamwar Nagar over pollution allegedly caused by the Kanjurmarg dumping ground.

The court questioned the BMC on the condition of waste management in the city and asked, “Is the entire city covered in garbage? Has the machinery become inactive?”
Expressing further displeasure, the bench observed that garbage and unclean conditions appeared to be widespread across the city. The judges also warned that action could be taken against BMC officials if the situation was not addressed.
The court stressed the need for the civic administration to have a proper Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for waste management and questioned how Mumbai could claim to be an international city amid such conditions.
The observations came during the hearing of the residents’ concerns regarding pollution linked to the Kanjurmarg dumping ground, bringing renewed focus on Mumbai’s waste-management practices and civic cleanliness.
