The Curtorim panchayat and villagers of Maina-Curtorim have se cured an order halting a proposed construction pro ject comprising flats and shops following strong op position from residents. The Additional Director of Panchayats ordered a halt to the project after vil lagers objected to the com mencement of construc tion allegedly without the required panchayat per mission.
Villagers had also raised concerns over tree cutting at the site. Curtorim sarpanch Mi lagres Rodrigues said the panchayat had stood by the villagers and its advocate had placed their objections and the legal and procedural issues before the authority. “Today, the panchayat has won the case against the builder. The villagers had strongly opposed the project and the panchayat stood be hind them,” Rodrigues said. He said allegations that the panchayat was supporting the builder were unfound ed. “We are with the villag ers,” he said, adding that the panchayat would contest the matter if the builder ap proached a higher authority.

Meanwhile, another pro posed construction project in Curtorim is also facing opposition from villagers, with the panchayat taking up the matter before the concerned authorities. Rodrigues said the panchayat was fighting the second case as well and would continue to support residents where develop ment proposals were op posed on genuine grounds, while defending its position before the competent au thorities. The developments have also highlighted the role of panchayats in scrutinis ing construction proposals and ensuring that projects obtain the required per missions and comply with applicable rules.
