Kochi: The Kerala Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing alleged financial irregularities surrounding the proposed visit of Lionel Messi and the Argentina national football team to Kochi has widened its investigation, with the SIT chief briefing Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on the progress of the case.
The inquiry relates to the previous government’s efforts to host an Argentina team match featuring Messi in Kochi in 2025. The proposed event did not take place, and investigators are examining alleged financial and procedural irregularities linked to the initiative.

Sources cited in reports said the investigation could also extend to former Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman. A separate departmental inquiry had reportedly flagged issues concerning the handling of the proposed event during his tenure.
The SIT on September 16 conducted searches at the Kochi headquarters of Reporter Broadcasting Company, which operates Malayalam news channel Reporter TV, as well as premises linked to its promoters. The searches covered five locations in Kochi and Wayanad and were carried out under court-issued warrants.
According to investigators, the searches were aimed at collecting documents and other evidence relating to the proposed Messi event and alleged financial transactions. Home Minister Chennithala said the SIT had obtained evidence during the searches but that details could not be disclosed at this stage.
The investigation is also examining financial transactions associated with the proposed event. Reports have said authorities are looking into alleged tax-related irregularities and overseas payments connected with the initiative.
The SIT, headed by ADGP P. Vijayan, was constituted after the Kerala Sports Department raised concerns over alleged irregularities and recommended a detailed investigation. The inquiry remains ongoing, and any further action against individuals will depend on the evidence collected by investigators.
