PONDA: After Banastarim mishap, Ponda police have taken serious cognizance by installing CCTV cameras on the main bridges through panchayat and have also started to follow up on the matter with the deputy collector. Accordingly, Curti-Khandepar panchayat has begun the process to install CCTV cameras on the Khandepar bridge.
After the infamous Banastarim mishap that took the lives of three, Ponda police had proposed that the local panchayats install CCTVs on the main bridges which come under their jurisdiction. However, Khandepar panchayat had already decided to do so about 4 months ago as people were dumping domestic garbage into the river from the bridge. After dumping the garbage, people would tie the plastic bags to the bridge.

Curti-Khandepar panchayat has installed 26 CCTV cameras in total in the panchayat area out of which one has been stolen while another was damaged by miscreants. The Panchayat has filed a complaint at Ponda police station regarding the same.
“The incidents of dumping garbage on the roadside has decreased by 80% thanks to the installation of CCTV cameras. Due to the CCTV footage, panchayat was also able to take action against 65 persons who were dumping garbage on the roadside. The panchayat is in the midst of completing the procedure to install cameras on old and new bridges at Khandepar,”said sarpanch Sanjana Naik.
