CALANGUTE: The works on the Calangute Beach promenade is progressing slowly and could not be completed before Christmas Day much to the disappointment of the locals and tourists.
Though the major works on the project is complete, few works like painting and tiling besides the ramp for handicapped and benches for elders are yet to be put up. However, the project is set to be thrown open for the general public and tourists before the end of the year, but without full completion of the project.
Joseph Sequeira has criticized Calangute MLA Michael Lobo for the delayed work, while Lobo expressed satisfaction over progress of work and hoped it would be open for public soon.
Speaking to Herald, Sequeira said, “The Calangute Beach promenade work was delayed not because of tiles or pavers, but due to the irresponsible attitude of the Calangute MLA. Same types of pavers were made available for footpath work at Candolim, but it could not be arranged for the project at Calangute.”
“The ramps for handicapped besides the benches for elders are not even seen at the site while lot of work is also pending. The Christmas Day has come and gone and there is no sign of the completed Calangute Beach promenade, a project Calangute villagers and tourists long for,” claimed Sequeira.
When contacted, Lobo said, “The work on the Calangute Beach promenade is almost ready, but here and there a few things are to be done. The ramp for handicapped and benches for elders will be put up at a later date.”
“We are concentrating on completing major part of the project, while the rest can be done simultaneously. I have been following up on the project day by day but it wasn’t ready in time to meet the Christmas deadline. We hope to provide the facility for the tourists by the year end,” he added.
