MAPUSA: Issue of unhygienic condition at the local anganwadi dominated the Nachinola gram sabha on Sunday, with locals claiming that their kids are unsafe there.
The Angawadi is presently housed in a single room the panchayat premise, which is triples up as a classroom, kitchen and a store room. This makes the facility very unhygienic.
Until a month ago, the Anganwadi had two rooms – a classroom and a kitchen-cum-storeroom. However, now the panchayat has allotted one of the two rooms to a local who is running a hotel to expand his business.
Locals say that the current atmosphere at the anganwadi is very unhygienic and that the 17 students enrolled there are at a high risk of falling sick.
Locals also pointed out that the issue was raised several times but the panchayat body did not bother to take any action.
Locals also complained a villager Arjun Dalvi who is running a hotel in the panchayat premises that he is leaving all his waste water just outside the hotel, resulting in causing mosquito breeding and pollution.
Responding to the concerns of the locals, the panchayat said that it would allow the anganwadi to run in panchayat premise for next three months.
The sarpanch said that a proposal with an estimate of Rs 3.50 lakh has already been sent to the government for construction of new premise which would have a study room, a toilet and a kitchen.
Meanwhile, the gram sabha passed a resolutions to construct a volleyball court in the existing children park and reconstruct all the gutters.
