Wow! govt plans ‘Genting Island’ for Goa

PANJIM: Goa government has announced plans to develop Goa’s first theme park near Mayem Lake, on the lines of Genting Island, Malaysia. Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar informed the Goa Assembly that government has identified around 15,000 sqm land near the lake for the purpose.

The proposed concept also includes nature park and five-star hotel besides the lake area, beautification and upgradation of the promenade. “It is envisaged that this product would generate cumulative revenues of around Rs 4,500 crore and a NPV of Rs 1,695 crore over a 25-year period,” he said.
The project would employ 200 persons besides significant indirect and induced employment for handicraft artisans, food suppliers, taxi operators etc.

Opposition Leader Pratapsingh Rane cautioned the government that Genting island is known for gambling, to which Parulekar assured that the theme park would not have facilities like gambling.
“All efforts are made to develop hinterland tourism so that the department can offer diversified holiday for the tourists…white water rafting launched in my dear friend’s (Rane) Sattari taluka has been getting good response. It has become attraction for the international and national tourists,” he said.
Parulekar also informed the House that government will also launch night safari at Bondla Zoo which would be a good entertainment for children. “The zoo will have world class facilities, night safaris, improved animal enclosures, nature education centre, eco tourism resorts, etc for which Rahul Deshpande and Associates have been appointed as Project Management Consultants.
