MARGAO: Residents of Malbhat cried foul over the inaction of the authorities in crack a whip against the illegal scrap yards operating in their backyard.
They pointed out that district Collector, Venancio Furtado had video filmed the activity inside the scrap yard during an inspection of the locality last month, but in vain. The residents maintained that complaints to the local Margao police has also failed to elicit any response from the men in uniform.
Monday evening witnessed an uproar in the locality after those running the scrap yard questioned the media for filming the yard.
A local resident Elvis Fernandes said that the ground reality at the scrap yard remained the same despite the inspection of the area by the district and police authorities. “Nothing has changed for the better since the inspection of the scrap yard by the district collector. We have knocked the doors of every authority for relief, but in vain,” Elvis said, while hoping against hope that the authorities will finally crack a whip against the anti social activity in the area.
Another resident S Kalangutkar said the residents have almost lost hope with no help and assistance forthcoming from the government and law enforcement agencies. “That the authorities are slow in acting against the illegal scrap yards and the anti social activity shows that these people are well connected,” Kalangutkar said.
