PERNEM: Pernem locals are upset over the government’s plan of providing the Sawalwada indoor stadium on lease to one company for 18 months.
The indoor stadium which is build spending Rs 36 crore of public fund at Sawalwada in Pernem was awaiting public opening for the last two years even when the project was completed and ready for inauguration. However, instead of making the project operational for public, the government is now planning to give the stadium on lease to one company for 18 months.

The residents of Pernem Taluka have expressed their anger on the government’s decision and further raised questions stating how much more the government wants to pamper this company.
“The indoor stadium was set up to promote sports by providing facilities and amenities to the youth and booming players in the taluka. However, instead of opening the indoor stadium for the public and sports players, the government is planning to give it to one company on lease. Before constructing this indoor stadium, this particular ground was being used to have taluka level games but with the decision of the government, they are depriving the sports players and youth of the taluka with total injustice,” Bhaskar Nerulkar, a resident of Pernem Taluka said.
“We want to know whether the government is also going to give the new building of the sub district hospital at Tuem on lease because that building is also awaiting inauguration. So also, if the government is leasing out government buildings, then whether the government projects will also be handed over to a non-government organisation,” Nerulkar added.
