If Goa Sewerage & Infrastructure Development Corporation Managing Director Arvind Patil is to be believed, the Kudchadkar nullha will be connected to the newly-laid line, linking the sewerage treatment plant at Sirvodem.
Instead of installing a pumping station at the Kudchadkar nullha as mooted by former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, the Sewerage Corporation is laying a new line to carry the nullah water to the treatment plant.
Says Arvind Patil: “We expect to commission the new line in the first week of April. After the commissioning, the Kudchadkar nullah will no longer empty Margao’s sewage water into the Salpem lake.”
Sources in the know, however, said that the lake will be completely rid of the sewage only after the Colmorod-Ratwado area of the city is connected to the underground sewerage line, where work on the project is currently underway.
While the commissioning of the new underground line may stop flow of sewage water into the Salpem lake, the beautification and ultimate restoration of the lake will be taken up by the Tourism department.
“The Tourism Department is preparing a beautification plan for the Salpem lake. The idea is to restore the past glory of the lake,” informed Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado.
