PANJIM: The GOACAN has urged the Goa Police to introduce a special road safety awareness plan for the cyclists on the Highways, major district roads and village roads in the State.

The GOACAN in its letter to Traffic Superintendent of Police Dinraj Govekar pointed out that the bicycles have been part of life in the State for a very long time and were even being registered with the local bodies. However, since they are not within the ambit of the Motor Vehicles Act they have not come under any special programme of road safety.
“In the last 10 years we have seen a rise in the number of road accidents involving the bicycles where there has been a steady increase in the number of deaths of cyclists. There has been a growth in the number of people of all ages taking to using the bicycles on a regular basis whether as a means of transport to work and shop or for the purpose of physical fitness or just as a hobby,” GOACAN Co-ordinator Roland Martins said.
While the road network in the State is being improved with the highways and major district roads taken into account needs of cyclists, he alleged that in reality very little is done to make the dedicated lane for bicycles operational and to put the signage as required.
