MARGAO: Nineteen cases related to rape and sexual assaults have been recorded in the last six months in the South Goa District itself, besides six murders, which is an alarming figure.

As informed by the senior officer at South Goa Police Headquarters, altogether around 382 offences have been registered at the different police stations of South Goa between January and June 2021. However, the police have succeeded in tracking 320 cases.
In these six months, South Goa District has reported six murders and six attempt to murder cases. What is alarming is that the figure of rape cases is 19, out of which the police have arrested accused persons in nearly 18 cases. This static indicates that the crime rate is increasing day by day.
The case reported of Bogmalo shoot-out two days ago, besides day-light attempt to murder of Anwar Shaikh at Fatorda, assault on youth at Navelim, besides attack on RTI activist Narayan Naik, has created insecurity amongst the citizens.
There is much discussion amongst the people about the six murder cases reported in just six months of time. The insecurity has prevailed despite police being successful in solving the cases at the earliest.
The police have also reported nearly 16 cheating cases and eight have been solved by the concerned police officers. Eight cases have been registered against the accused in creating riots by an unlawful assembly, besides offences in five cases of unlawful assembly.
The police have investigated nearly 47 out of 48 assault cases in the South Goa District. More to be bothered is that nine cases of kidnapping have been reported in the district. However, the police have succeeded in cracking all the cases. On the other hand, nearly 32 citizens have succumbed to road accidents in the last six months in South Goa.
That’s not over, the district has also reported 144 theft cases, besides three incidents of robberies. There is a five day-light house thefts. 33 cases of vehicle thefts have also been reported at the different police stations of the South District.
Speaking to Herald Pallavi Naik expressed worry with regard to increasing the crime rate in the district. According to her, the migrants are one of the reasons for the increase in crimes.
“There is no watch on the migrants residing in the State. Hundreds of migrants are seen residing in rented rooms, but no proper information is submitted to the police. They move freely day and night,” she stated.
While Rosita Dias of Benaulim stated the crimes against the women and murders are alarming.
“Insecurity is prevailing in the minds of the citizens. Solving the cases doesn’t help to stop the crimes. Society is missing the values. Grid and revenge have resulted in hilarious crimes. Goa is now witnessing the crimes of day-light shoot-out,” said Rosita.
