Sewage generation in urban Goa is176 mld, treatment capacity 66 mld: Jal Shakti data

PANJIM: The Union Ministry of Jal Shakti released State-wise data of sewage generation from urban areas and corresponding sewage treatment capacity available as per the findings of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).  As per that the sewage generation in Goa’s urban areas is reported to be 176 mld while the installed capacity of sewerage treatment plants in the corresponding area is 66 mld.  It further added that there are 11 Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) installed which have the operational capacity of 44 mld.

The Ministry also shared details regarding the progress of construction of community systems for grey water management during the last three years. These are community soak pits, waste stabilization ponds, constructed wetlands, etc.

The Ministry said the State of Goa had constructed 2 such community grey water management stems in the 2018-9, then 6 in 2019-20 and 3 in 2020-21.

“It is the responsibility of the States/Union Territories and local bodies to ensure required treatment of sewage and industrial effluents in STPs and effluent treatment plant (ETPs) to the prescribed norms before discharging into river and other water bodies, coastal waters or land to prevent and control of pollution therein,” said the Ministry in a statement issued on Thursday.
