MARGAO: GOACAN on Wednesday has urged the Traffic Department, of the Goa government for a special road safety awareness plan for cyclists on highways, MDRs, and village roads.
As informed by the co-ordinator of GOACAN Roland Martins, they have made a representation to the Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Arvind Gawas in this regard on eve of World Bicycle Day.

World Bicycle Day is observed on June 3, after the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to this effect on April 12, 2018.
GOACAN in its letter has pointed out that bicycles have been part of life in Goa for a very long time and were even being registered with the local bodies; however since they are not within the ambit of the Motor Vehicles Act they have not come under any special program of road safety.
In its letter, GOACAN has called upon SP Traffic to undertake all traffic police cells in Goa to hold sensitisation meetings of cycling club representatives in their respective jurisdiction, besides include bicycles and cyclists in the forthcoming observation of the State Road Safety Week to be observed in September 2021 and National Road Safety Month in January 2022.
