Keri villagers are falling sick due to diarrhoea, coliform bacteria is found in canal water
For the past week approximately sixty residents of Keri village from Sattari Taluka, are sick due to diarrhoea and dysentery. Some have been admitted in the sub health center, Keri village and others at the Primary Health Center, Sankhali villagers said.
The sample of water analysed was found contaminated by coliform organisms, thus making it unsuitable for human consumption. The Health Officer at the Primary Health Centre Sankhali said the situation was now under control.
According to the villagers, they have been drinking water from the canal for last five years. It is polluted and the coliform bacteria is present in that canal water. Earlier they said they were drinking water from the well but since it was not treated water they stopped.
Two years ago, Keri villagers blocked roads disturbing inter-state travel demanding treated clean water. To assuage them the government promised them well as well as a generator. Nothing happened and now the villagers are threatening to go out on the roads again.
“ We need the water jack well and the generator in our village. It will solve our water crisis problem, which we are facing in our village for several years. Now we are drinking water filled with bacteria and falling sick.” Said Dashrath Morajkar, a villager.
“ Now a days in Sattari, there is bacteria in the water and it is so important to take care of one’s health. We are working in the technology world, where one’s health is so important. Everyone has to build the toilet compulsory in their houses” said Poornima Kelkar, a village woman.
