However, despite the rush of fish lovers at the site it was worth appreciating that all COVID protocols were followed.

Allen Menezes, who bagged the right to harvest the lake, was extremely happy with the catch of the much-in-demand local fish.

Allen said the harvesting began at 6 am and the fish was ready for sale. As the news of fish harvesting spread, fish lovers from neighbouring villages made a beeline at Mai-Tollem.

He said, “At the moment there is a shortage of fish in the market due to the curfew imposed by the government in wake of rapidly increasing COVID cases and hence we witnessed a massive rush of the fish lovers to purchase the freshwater fish on Saturday. However, we followed all the COVID protocols.”

Volunteers at the site were seen requesting fish lovers to maintain social distancing and wear masks. Discipline was maintained despite a huge rush to buy the fish.

“Yes, on day one we have witnessed a massive catch of a variety of fish such as Dadio, Chonok, Catla, Catalog, Komin, and Ker. There was much demand for Chonok, but today there was less catch of Chonok”, Allen said adding that he is in the business of harvesting freshwater fish for the past four years.

He said each year there is a huge catch.

The freshwater fish harvesting activity at Mai-Tollem will also continue on Sunday (May 23).
