BELGAUM, JAN 13
A slew of attractions are on offer to draw in large numbers of Goans and foreign tourists to Belgaum to witness the two-day Belgaum International Kite Festival beginning on January 16.
The two-day festival will be inaugurated on January 16, as national and international kite fliers would display their exemplary skills during the festival.
A special reception awaits Goan and foreign tourists on this occasion.
Apart from a complimentary trip to Belgaum to take part in the festival, the organizers have also arranged a special shopping bonanza for the visitors, ranging from traditional delicacies to the famous Shahpuri Sarees.
A procession with the visitors atop an open bus has been also planned during the festival.
“A grand welcome awaits the tourists as 108 traditionally dressed women accompanied by three conventional bands would extend a hearty welcome to the foreign and Goan tourists, who are expected to visit the festival in large numbers,” said MLA Abhay Patil, who is overseeing arrangements for the festival.
“Stalls with popular products from the region, such as handloom sarees, sweets, food-stuff, processed food products and different types of kites will be a bonanza to the Goans who visit this festival,” he added.
Around 30 international kite-flying experts have already confirmed their participation. Some kite flyers from France and UK shall display their dexterity by flying a number of kites simultaneously with both hands.
“We propose to take the visiting tourists and dignitaries to the nearby tourism spots so that this shall automatically culminate in a regular annual feature of Belgaum City in the years to follow,” the MLA said.
Other events at the festival include a photo exhibition on  kites and a coaching camp for children in kite-flying techniques.
Goans and tourists interested in witnessing the event as well as kite lovers who wish to take part in the festival are requested to contact V K Rao at 09844044199 and/or  Chaitanya Kulkarni on Ph: 09480188877.
